What is the Role of the Governing Body?

Governors have several roles with the key aim of ensuring the school provides the best possible education for the children:

- Setting strategic direction.
- Ensuring accountability.
- Monitoring and evaluating school performance.
- Appointing the Head Teacher.

The Head Teacher is responsible for the day to day running of the school. The full Governing Body meets every half term but much of the work is carried out by sub- committees on a regular basis. Our main committees are: Finance, Premises (incorporating Health and Safety), Curriculum and Staffing. Many governors also have individual roles and areas of expertise.
What Should I do if I have a Query or Concern?

The first point of contact should always be the class teacher; the next stage would be the Head Teacher and then the Governing Body. An outline of the complaints procedure is on display in the school and the full policy is available in the school office.
How Do I Contact the Governors?

Many of our Parent Governors are often around in the playground and are more than happy to have a chat. In case you are not sure who we are, photos will be appearing on the Governors’ section of the school website soon (this section is currently being updated). There are usually one or two of us sitting near the school office during parents’ evenings and we welcome the opportunity to talk to parents. If you would like to contact us by writing, a sealed letter marked for the attention of the Chair of Governors can be left at the school office. Alternatively the Chair and Vice Chair can be reached by email: chairofgov@oldbuckenham-pri.norfolk.sch.uk or gandp.barrett@waitrose.com.
What are the Governors' Duties?

- To determine the aims and overall conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement.
- To be a critical friend of the Head Teacher
- To set and review staffing levels and structures
- To appoint Head Teachers and Deputy Head Teachers
- To set and agree school budgets
- Ensure policies are set and adhered to
- Monitor Health and Safety and management of the premises.
